Combatting Corrpuption
The necessity to more actively and head on address corruption in development assistance has been highlighted in various forums during the past few months. Many actors have answered the Minister for Development Cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson’s call to discuss the underlying causes, their effects on efforts to alleviate poverty as well as solutions to the phenomena. SPIDER is convinced that information and communication technology (ICT) can serve as an effective tool in a multitude of activities. A successful fight against corruption needs to include both measures aimed at removing the opportunities to request unlawful rewards, as well as creating ways to increase the risks of being detected.
Through the proliferation of mobile phones citizens have become empowered. Through one of the 4 billion mobile phones estimated to be in use currently, affected citizens around the world now have the means to anonymously report their grievances to digital platforms, mass media and civil society organizations.
